Yellow, White, Butterflies and Polka Dots

This week I am entering a card at Joan's Gardens for her weekly challenge. The challenge this week is to make a yellow and white card.  Yellow represents hope and joy to me.

Here are the guidelines for this week's card:

• Use Yellow and White as your color theme
• Use at least 2 butterflies
• Use some Polka Dots
• Include some type of swirl(s)
• You must use a product sold at Joan's Gardens
• Mention that you are doing the card/project for Joan's Gardens Challenge

I used yellow on yellow polka dot paper (hard to see the dots in this picutre, but they are there) as a background, and used die cuts from the following:

• Spellbinders Jewel Flowers and Flourishes; Fancy Togs 3 - S5-031
• Memory Box Pippi Butterfly
• Cheery Lynn Fanciful Flourish 

The sentiment is one that was previously featured at Word Art Wednesday, which I printed out on my computer, cut and embossed with a die and stuck onto the paper with dimensional stickies. A large yellow rhinestone is put in the center of the flower for added pop.

It's Never Too Late

One of my favorite quotes is by George Eliot: "It's never too late to be who you might have been."  It's so encouraging and spurs me on to reach higher and go farther.

I made a card this week using that quote and some Spellbinder and Memory Box dies, which is larger than I usually make; sometimes there is just not enough real estate on an A2 card, so this one is 8 1/2" by 5 1/2 ". Cream colored cardstock was used. The background is made from a brown paper lunch sack--the kind you get at the grocery store, and it is embossed with a basket weave EF.

Ugh.  Not very attractive. This card looks totally clumsy and not what I want to give to anyone. In addition, the print on the sentiment appears to be rubbing off.  Not acceptable.

So I reworked the card into something I like much better.  Here is the transformed card:

Red, White and Black

This week I am submitting a card for the challenge at Joan's Gardens. It's a fun one, using vellum and the colors red, white and black.  Here are the requiremnts:

• Make a flower using vellum
• Use colors Red, Black and White
• Use die cut border
• Use a seniment
• You must use a product sold at Joan's Gardens
• Also, mention that you are doing the card/project for Joan's Gardens Challenge

When there is a requirement of using black, I always have to figure out how to use it without making the card look dreary and sad.  Too much black can be a depressing thing; you don't want to use a lot on a birthday card or wedding or anniversary card, and you surely do not want to use too much on a sympathy card.  So I have attempted to make a cheery birthday card here using the color requirements using some discontinued papers of red and black which I had in my stash, and a printed out birthday sentiment from my computer. The vellum flower is surrounded by white foliage and topped off with a clear rhinestone.

A Virtuous Woman

This week at Word Art Wednesday we were given a wonderful scripture graphic about the Virtuous Woman.  I can't think of a more wonderful sentiment to put on a Mother's Day card. However, since my mother and my husband's mother have both gone to Heaven, I will be giving this as a birthday card to a precious woman of faith who has been a mentor to many.

I started out with white cardstock and put some dark turquoise paper on it, followed by a sweet butterfly print with happy colors.  I printed out the sentiment and put a frame around it, backed by the same turquoise paper, and backed again by a redish pink frame.  A bright pink bow and a die cut turquoise butterfly finished off the card.

Peaches and Cream

This week at Joan's Gardens we have a challenge that has really made me dig deep for ideas.

Here are the requirements for this card that I am making for this week's challenge:

• Use some type of Fan - stamped, die cut, etc.
• Use colors Peach, Cream and Green
• Use Lace
• Use Pearls
• You must use a product sold at Joan's Gardens. Also, mention that you are doing the card/project for Joan's Gardens Challenge.

The background mounting is green paper and an ivory piece that was embossed. I don't have a lot of peach colored paper, nor do I have a fan die, so I cut out some fan pieces out of an almost-peach-colored pink paper and dabbed a little yellow ink on it to "peachify" it. I am using a paper lace doily as part of the background papers, and it is dabbed with some peach colored ink. Pearls are glued to each fan blade; I added some green flourishes and a rolled rose.  The sentiment is printed from my computer.

Happy Tenth Anniversary

We have a really sweet challenge this week from Flutterby Wednesdays.  We are to make a love-themed card, and I chose to make an anniversary card for my daughter and son-in-law for their tenth anniversary.

I used two embossing folders, pink ribbon, and a heart cut out, in addition to a die cut sentiment that says "Happy Anniversary." Oh, and little pink butterflies, of course!

It was a pretty simple card to make, although, 90 per cent of the time it takes me to make a card is all done up in my head first, thinking what will and what won't look good, experimenting with sizes and shapes.  I'm probably not alone in that respect.

Flutterby Wednesday Challenge for April 24, 2013

We had a fun challenge this week from Flutterby Wednesday; this week we have a layout to follow, and I must say, I had to think a lot about what papers to use for each part of the design.  Of course, we must include the flutterby element, and I chose to use three butterflies on the upper right side of the card.  I used no dies on this card, which is a bit unusual. Rather, cut-outs were used and assembled.  The flower is  multi-layered with graduated sizes of yellow and pink petals, then after they were assembled, I fluffed them out a bit to add dimension.  A yellow rhinestone is in the middle of the flower. It is hard to tell, but I used a very light coat of gold spray paint all over the card.  It is so subtle that if a person did not know it was there, they probably wouldn't notice, but upon close examination, there is a slight matte gold glimmer on the card.

Wedding Card

This week at Joan's Gardens we are challenged to take elements from the letters in TULIP and make a card. This is what I came up with in making a wedding card for the daughter of a friend:

• T - trim, as in the corner embellishment
• U - union, as in holy matrimony
• L - lattice, lace border
• I -  items from Joan's Gardens
• P - pearls
• S - sentiment, sparkly glitter

The daughter of a special friend is getting married this weekend, and I wanted to make her a card for the occasion.  The card is pretty much white on white, with a few silver features, and a teeny bit of black.

I started out by embossing vellum with a polka dot embossing folder; then glued a piece of die cut lattice onto the top of that.  The lattice has glitter glued onto it. The top and bottom of the "framework" has a lace border glued down. The sentiment was printed out on my computer and an oval frame was die cut around it; pearl embellishments were added to it, and then all of that was attached with dimensional stickies. Three rolled roses made from plain paper printed in black ink with non-sensical phrases were added, along with leaves and flourishes made from white cardstock and white vellum. A glittery bow was added at the bottom left and a silver butterfly at the top right, and a silver corner embellishment was added on the bottom right to balance out the strong embellishments on the left.

The card is actually whiter than indicated in the pictures, and the bow is definitely a bright white color with iridescent sparkles on it.

Card for a Girly-Girl

This week at Joan's Gardens we are in a girly-girl mode, which is what I like best, anyway. Pretty much all of my cards could only go to really girly ladies, so I relish challenges like this.

These are the guidelines for the challenge:

• Use pastel colors
• Use some type of lace (can be real or die cut)
• Use at least one bow
• Include flowers
• Use at least one product from Joan's Gardens

This card was a lot of fun to put together.  I used lace from my sewing stash for a background, cut out shoes, a die cut frame, a cute sentiment, rolled roses and die cut foliage.  In addition to the rolled flowers, the lace has flowers, as well.  I had some dried foliage from the craft store and spray painted it gold and tucked it into the little bouquet, although it is hard to see in the picture.  Note: the card is actually more pastel than it appears in the picture.  I brightened up the picture to make it show up better, and in the process, some of the darker areas got darker...

1 Corinthians13:7 GBCB-009

Today I am posting a happy card with a familiar sentiment:  1 Corinthians 13:7.  From the "Love" chapter of the Bible, it is one of the most well-known and quoted verses.  It is encouraging and will stand forever in its truth and beauty.
