For Everything There Is a Season GBCB-017

This week at Joan's gardens we are challenged to make a card with these guidelines:

  • Use gingham, checks or plaids
  • Colors:  green, white and brown
  • Butterflies
  • Something fallish... pumpkins, scarecrows, leaves, etc.

Starting out with white cardstock, a brown layer was added with dimensional stickies. The next layer was also added with dimensional stickies and was run through an EF with a pretty leaf pattern, then brayered with green, brown and gold ink.

I had bought a cute little gingham stamp from Joan awhile back but had never used it. Now was a great chance! Using green ink, I stamped it out and used an oval die to make a cutout so that the scripture from Ecclesiastes shows. It is attached with dimensional stickies, also.

Last, a brown and copper bow was added and tiny punched out butterflies.  Here is the card:

These are the tools used to make the card:

  • Spellbinders:  Classic Scalloped Ovals
  • Paper Studio:  A2 Leaf EF, Tiny Butterfly Punch
  • Green, gold and brown inks
  • Copper and brown ribbon
  • Bow Easy
  • Our Daily Bread:  Gingham Stamp

Glory to God in the Highest

I wanted to start making Christmas cards a little early this year so that there would not be a time crunch during the already busy Christmas season.

It has been my practice to send Christmas cards that really keep in the spirit of the Reason for the Season. Some of my unchurched friends may never hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and His love for them any other way.

I found this sweet vintage picture online and decided to use it as the front of the card. It had "Merry Christmas" on the upper right hand corner, but I wanted to change that, so I printed out "Glory to God in the Highest" from my computer and used a ribbon die to cut it out. It was too large, so I trimmed it down some.

It doesn't look like it, but the main base is on ivory cardstock, and the picture and sentiment are printed on ivory cardstock, as well. The picture is framed by a die cut and the frame edges are  dabbed with gold glitter glue. The gold bow is added to finish the front of the card.

Here is a picture of the front of the card:

I printed off on the ivory cardstock some inside and back-of-the-card text to make it really special. on the inside top is the Christmas story as we read in the account found in Luke 2. This is the top of the inside of the card:

The bottom inside is stamped with a sentiment that says "Warm wishes for a season of peace, hope and love."

And the back gives a Scripture also, and the "Handmade especially for you by Ginny" part. This was all created with Microsoft Publisher and made doing this part of the card easier:

A Red and Silver Thank You GBCB-002

I ran some thoughts through my mind this morning about red, black and silver and came up with this card. It starts out with a black card base and on that is a piece of white cardstock. On top of that is a red and black patterned paper. The ovals are die cut and a thank you sentiment is stamped in black. The larger oval is die cut from four thicknesses of heavy duty aluminum foil. A black and white two-layer butterfly is die cut and three little pearls are added to make the body of it. A silver double loop bow finishes the project.

Here is the card:

A Cheery Note of Encouragement

I love turquoise. The color is so happy and cheerful, and makes me smile; some thing lights up within me when I see certain colors, and turquoise is one of them.

Starting out with a white cardstock base, a turquoise layer that had been run through a swirly Paper Studio EF was added with dimensional stickies. The sentiment is one of my favorites--a quote from George Eliot--and helps me always to remember that today is the first day of the rest of my life. God has good things for us if we do not give up and He is always perfecting that which concerns us.  :o) The sentiment is framed with Spellbinders Labels 18 and is also added with dimensional stickies.

The corners are embellished with white die cuts (Cheery Lynn Lace Corner B161) and foliage (Cheery Lynn Mini Fanciful Flourish Right B291) and a rose (Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms) were added. I think they also add a "framing" effect to the overall look. The foliage is manipulated a little to make it more three-dimensional and lifelike. A silver and white double-looped ribbon bow was attached to the lower right hand corner and a sweet silver butterfly (Memory Box Pippi Butterfly) cut from four layers of heavy duty aluminum foil was attached to the top with a tiny sliver of a dimensional sticky to make him stand out a bit.

Here is a picture of the card:

This is a closeup of how the foliage can be raised to make the card have more of a pop. On some screens there may be a pink tinge, but all elements that are not turquoise are white:

And this picture shows the detail of silver threads running through the white ribbon:

Gold and Silver "You Make Me Smile" GBCB-003

Today I wanted to use some items that have been purchased, but never used. As it turned out, there were two new ones used because a couple of things that were tried just did not work. Seems that 90% of making a card is all mental. Picking and choosing colors, embellishments and the right sentiment that takes up the right amount of real estate on the card are all factors to be considered. So, after several tries of things that did not work, the card was finished.  :o)

The two new items I used were a thin silver ribbon bought at one of the craft stores, and a Martha Stewart "Punch around the Page" punch.

Starting out with white cardstock, a layer of silver paper was added. Then I got a piece of gold textured paper and used the Martha Stewart punch on it. Next, using Versamark ink and silver embossing powder, I put the sentiment in the middle of the "doily." and used the heat tool to emboss the powder.  So far, it looked like this:

Next I made the flowers out of gold vellum and put a little golden pearl in the middle of each one. One thing I have discovered about shaping the petals on flowers is that if you have strong fingernails (or fake ones like I have), you can curl the petals with your nails easier than using an embossing tool. Works for me, anyway....

I die cut leaves and stems and a butterfly out of aluminum foil, using about four thicknesses of the heavy duty kind. Then I placed the flowers and silver stems and leaves on with glue. Next I attached the silver bow, and last of all positioned the butterfly in the upper left hand corner of the card.

Here is the result:

And a closeup of the flowers and butterfly:

Cheerful Birdie Thank You Card GBCB-004

Good morning to all!  God is on His throne, and worthy to be praised!

I wanted to make a cheerful little thank you card using colors I don't usually use--oranges and browns. Normally I gravitate towards reds, purples, cool yellows and blues and don't go to the warm side of the color wheel much. But I had in mind a sweet redhead who has been a long-time friend, and she really deserves a card from her side of the color spectrum.  :o)

I had a doily made from a Spellbinders label die and cut three of the same one that looks like this:

Then they were layered and glued to form a doily:

After that they were dabbed with yellow ink and sprayed with pink glitter dust spray.

An ivory cardstock was used as a base, then a dark reddish layer, then a peachy polka dot piece. The doily was attached with dimensional stickies. I went through some little cut outs I had purchased in a package at a craft store and found a cute little birdie and some dogwood flowers and attached them with dimensional stickies, as well. Glitter glue was put on the breast of the bird and on the flowers both on the petals and in the center of each one.

A sprig of golden floral filler was added and then the gold and mesh bow. On top of the bow is a die cut word, "thanks."

Here is the card:

A Black and White Birthday GBCB-020

I love working with black and white. It is crisp and clean and bright, and if done with mostly white, and some cheery embellishments, it is not at all gloomy.

On this card, I started with white cardstock, put on top of that black cardstock, then embossed four different patterned strips and glued them to the black background. The sentiment is stamped with embossing ink and is hot tooled with silver embossing powder. The roses are hand rolled and are paired with die cut leaves. They are cut from a piece of sheet music paper printed from my computer, which I found somewhere on the internet.

Clean and Simple Black and White

I had fun this week with making a card with a clean crisp look that is simple and does not have a lot of frou-frou.

I had to put on my thinking cap, because I tend to go overboard with lots and lots of embellishments. But the truth is, stunning cards can be made with a minimum of embellies if you just put your mind to it.

Starting out with white cardstock, I put a layer of black on top of it, and another layer of white on that, that had been run through an embossing folder. The sentiment is framed with an under layer of black, and is printed from my computer. It is finished of with a white with black polka dots grosgrain ribbon tied into a bow.

No Eye Has Seen... GBCB

I am entering another card at Joan's Gardens this week with the following guidelines:
  • 3 flowers out of vellum (or you can use flowers you purchased)
  • Colors - Golden Yellow and Violet
  • Mesh or tulle
  • Stencil on paper  (if possible)
  • You must use a product sold at Joan's Gardens
I must say, this was a huge challenge for me. It became a series of trying things, some of which failed, and some of which worked. Starting out, I sponged some pink ink onto my yellow cardstock to make it more "golden." The golden yellow background cardstock was cut and covered with yellow tulle, then sprayed and sprinkled with crystal glitter. Next, the frames were made from a Spellbinders set my daughter got me for my birthday. They are mounted with dimensional stickies, as is the sentiment which is punched out. The edges of the sentiment are just barely colored with the paint used on the vellum flowers--just enough to make it pop a bit while mounted on the yellow frame. I got it from the internet somewhere, and it was part of a flowery scene, but since we were to make our own flowers, that part was not included. The flowers and greenery are cut from vellum. There were several inks I tried, but they were not really "violet," so there was a little set of paint markers in my drawer I had forgotten about, and the purple one seemed to be just the right color. The markers were used to color the greenery, also. The center of each flower is finished with a yellow piece cut from the same yellow cardstock as the backing and the inner frame, and a little yellow rhinestone in the center. I had made a bow out of tulle, but after all was said and done, it did not look good on the card, so that was replaced by a simple double-looped ribbon bow. This is finished off with a little Pippi butterfly cut from vellum and colored with the same paint marker as the flowers. Little iridescent purple rhinestones were glued to the body of the butterfly for some extra bling, and also glitter added to his wings. As for the stencil on paper element, if I had included that, it would have been just too, too much, don't you think? Since it was not an absolute requirement, I did not worry about it.

Here is the card:

I do wish the colors had come out truer. Although the yellow is pretty close to the right color, the flowers, frame and butterfly are much more of a violet color rather than the dark purple color which shows up in the picture. At least, that is how it appears on my monitor--maybe others view it differently. I am sure the lighting has a lot to do with it, because I took a picture of the card in different lighting and wow......  What a difference!  The flowers, frame and butterfly looked much more violet, but the yellow color was way off.  Whatcha gonna do????

Here is a closeup of the flowers:

And the butterfly:

Here are the products I used:

Psalm 84:3 GBCB-016

I am making another vintage theme card with a scene; the vintage scene used here was taken from the internet, as it is hard for me to find papers that have vintage scenes that are appropriate for my take on this challenge.

The picture was originally a sepia color but brown seems a little sad to me and a soft Wedgewood blue seemed more fun and a happier hue, so it was re-colored.

All the layers are mounted with dimensional stickies, so that the layers pop a bit. The blue layer is sprayed with blue glitter mist, then two die cuts were placed on top of that. A three-looped bow was made with 1/8 inch ribbon and attached on the diagonal. White glitter glue was applied to the loopy ends of the sentiment and a thin line around the outside of the sentiment. Little white pearls are put in the lower right hand corner of the bird picture to offset and balance the bow in the upper left hand corner. Little white pearls are on the sentiment, as well.

The bird in the picture reminded me of a song I sang in junior high school choir. We were allowed to sing scriptures in public schools back then, and the song has never left me. (Practicing that song every day in choir really implanted the verse on my heart.) Although the words we sang are a bit different from the translation used in the sentiment on the card, they still ring true and are so sweet. The psalm starts out with "How lovely are Thy dwellings, O Lord of Hosts. My soul longeth, yea, fainteth for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." Then comes the part about the bird in the picture...  This is what the sentiment says, which is a different translation from what we sang:

Even the sparrows have built a nest,

and the swallows have their own home;

they keep their young near your altars,

Lord Almighty, my king and my God.

Psalm 84:3

Thank You, Beatrix Potter

This week is a vintage scene week, and it was hard to find paper with an actual vintage scene on it, rather than just a redundant old fashioned image repeated every inch or two on the page. I went to my local craft store and found nothing there that was appropriate, so off to the internet I went.

There was this sweet little Beatrix Potter (The Tale of Peter Rabbit, 1902) print from her well known book that seemed just perfect.

Starting with an ivory colored cardstock, a green cardstock was added, then the print of Peter Rabbit. The scene is highlighted with a bit of glitter glue on the carrots and on the little bird; a green raffia ribbon is added, and the sentiment is die cut from Spellbinders S4-324 Ribbon Banners. The card seems very simple, but the endearing little illustration did not need a lot of embellishment, in my opinion.  :o)

Monochromatic Purple

I am entering a card at ABC Challenges, and the rule this week is, keep the card monochromatic.

This card is purple upon purple upon purple, and is made with coordinating purple papers, purple and white ribbon, white cardstock and purple ink used in the sentiment. Some rhinestones were used also for a little bling and sparkle. It is finished off with a white glittery bow and is sprayed with silver glitter mist.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing...

Hello, everyone. Hope your day has been blessed.

The card I made today features purple, white, leaves, a textured layer, and a negative die cut. Basic white cardstock was the foundation of the card; next, a dark purple layer of cardstock was laid over that. The sentiment is from a favorite hymn and is computer generated and printed onto a lighter purple cardstock. It is laid underneath the white embossed layer that has a frame cut out to create the negative space. The white embossed layer was run through a leaf EF, so that aspect is very subtle.

A purple scroll work border is placed on the bottom. Two different kinds of flowers are stacked on top of each other, both from different Spellbinders die cut sets. The bottom one is cut from vellum and is sprayed with diamond glitter dust. The one on top is cut from white cardstock and is sprayed with purple glitter dust. A purple rhinestone is positioned in the middle of the stacked flower and more light purple punched leaves are added around the flower. A punched butterfly floats on the top of the card.

Purple and White Birthday Card

Hello to all. Hope that your weekend was wonderful.

I had a chance to make another card and had a lot of fun doing this one. It features a negative die cut in two of the corners, a textured layer, the colors purple and white, and leaves. A purple piece of patterned paper was attached to the basic white cardstock and on top of that is the embossed white cardstock with the corners cut out to show the negative die cut. (It will be fun to use these corner die cuts on another project...) This is attached with dimensional stickies, as was the sentiment which is framed in two different purple papers.  The sentiment is stamped with purple ink, although the picture makes it look more blue. Clearly, the color in the picture is not true, as the ink used was a grapey purple, not blue. The leaves are cut from several layers of aluminum foil, and purple diecut rolled roses were glued onto the card. A purple double-looped gingham bow was added to finish the project.

Our Help Is in the Name of the Lord

We have another exciting challenge from Joan's Gardens (www.atjoansgardens.com) this week and I am entering a card at this site and also at Word Art Wednesday.  Here are Joan's guidelines for this week:
  • Die Cut image using the Negative
  • Colors of purple and white
  • Textured layer
  • Leaves
  • You must use a product sold at Joan's Gardens
  • Mention that you are doing the card/project for Joan's Gardens Challenge
We have a wonderful Scripture image from Word Art Wednesday this week that is a reminder of the enormity, power and grace of God Who is ever willing to help us in our time of need.

While we were in Hawaii last week visiting our new baby grandson, our nephew in Oklahoma died. He was young, and his passing was a shock to us all, because we had no knowledge that he was not healthy. What would we do without God's comfort in times like these? Sometimes in our grief words fail us, but God is always our refuge and our strength. Knowing that Ben is with the Lord and that we will see him again is giving us great consolation.

God always encourages me with His wonderful Word, and I am thankful for it and for the artistry that Word Art Wednesday uses in making these lovely sentiments from the Bible.

 *****************

So, on this week's challenge, my card is nothing like the picture on Joan's blog page, but the guidelines were still followed, if perhaps, somewhat out of the box...

The negative die cut space is on the overlay of white cardstock with purple leaves, which frames the sentiment, (which is underneath the overlay and printed on lavender cardstock); it is cut out of a white piece of cardstock which has been embossed and colored using a brayer with purple ink, accenting the leaf pattern. That is the textured layer, as well. The flowers are from a "bush" of small blossoms which were bought at either Joann's, or even Walmart (don't remember because they have been in my drawer for awhile, waiting for that special opportunity to be used). A purple bow is added to balance out the layout and add interest, as well as little purple butterflies which are cut from the same purple paper as the corner background piece. I wish the colors would have come out better in the photo. On my monitor the sentiment looks pink (it is really lavender) and the flowers look blue (they are really white--no blue tones in them). And the ribbon is purple, not dark blue. Oh, well. Sometimes colors just don't come out the way they should in online photos.
